When to use this mode

Imagine it’s the middle of the quarter. The roadmap has shifted since you agreed on the plan, and in an internal review someone asks whether you are still on track.

Looking at the live roadmap, you can see where things stand - but not exactly what moved, by how much, or which changes still need attention. Across many items and fields, those changes can be easy to miss - a date that moved, an estimate that doubled, or a scope field that changed.

The ‘Actual vs planned’ view mode gives you that comparison directly in the roadmap, highlighting what has changed since the plan was saved and where your roadmap has drifted.

The earlier you catch a shift, the more you can do about it. A slip you catch now is a decision you get to make. The same slip found at quarter-end is just something to explain.

How it works and what it shows you

With 'Actual vs planned’ view mode selected, the roadmap shows each item’s current values, while changes from the saved plan are marked directly on each item.

3 signals show you what has changed:

Changed fields badge - how many tracked fields changed.
Changed values highlighted on the item - which visible values changed.
Items entering or leaving the plan - which items were added to or removed.

1. Changed fields badge:

The round yellow badge on the right side of an item shows how many tracked fields have changed since the plan was saved.

Select the badge to see the full list of changes for that item. The original value appears on the left, and the current value on the right.

Select any individual change to see the full history of that field since the plan was saved.

In the example below: the badge shows 3, meaning three tracked fields have changed. When we open the history for Importance, we can see that this field changed twice - from Med to High, and then from High to Urgent.

2. Changed values highlighted on the item:

For fields displayed on the roadmap item, changed values are visually highlighted directly on the item. This lets you see both the current value and that it has changed from the saved plan without opening the Changed fields badge.

Which changes appear directly on the roadmap item depends on your view configuration. The field must be both tracked in Actual vs planned and displayed on the roadmap item via the Layout button.

In the example below:

Six fields are being tracked for changes.
Two of them - Title and Status - are also displayed on the roadmap item, so their changed values are highlighted directly on the item.
When Status is removed from the Layout settings, only the changed Title remains highlighted.

3. Items entering or leaving the plan

Changes aren’t limited to individual fields. Entire items can also be added to or removed from the plan after it was saved. Actual vs planned marks these items directly on the roadmap so you can immediately distinguish changes in scope from changes within an existing item.

Added - the item was not part of the saved plan and was added afterward.
Descoped - the item was part of the saved plan but is no longer included in it.
Deleted - the item was part of the saved plan but has since been deleted entirely.
