Custom Timeframes let product teams structure work around the planning cadences that matter most to them. Instead of being limited to Quarters or Sprints, you can create and use your own planning rhythms.

This flexibility allows you to align planning across teams, synchronize delivery with your organization’s processes, and manage work in real-world cadences.

In this article:

What are Custom Timeframes?

  • A Timeframe custom field is used to define your own planning cadence for either a Workspace or the Portfolio.

  • These fields can be applied to any work item or OKR.

  • You can use them across backlog views, roadmaps, capacity planning, and automation rules to align processes to these time cadences.

  • Timeframe custom field integrates seamlessly with development tools to sync dates and ensure consistency across systems.

  • Portfolio-level Timeframes cascade to all connected workspaces. This ensures consistent planning and reporting across multiple product areas.

Why use Custom Timeframes?

Custom Timeframes provide the flexibility to mirror how your teams actually work. Whether that means quarterly business planning, program increments, or longer delivery cycles. By tailoring cadences to your processes, you gain:

  • Clarity: A single source of truth for timelines across multiple teams and levels.

  • Consistency: Alignment between product strategy, execution, and reporting.

  • Efficiency: Less manual effort when switching between planning views or syncing with external tools.

  • Confidence: The ability to model realistic delivery commitments and manage risks across product areas.

Creating a Custom Timeframe

  1. Go to your Workspace settings.

  2. Select Custom Fields.

  3. Click Add custom field and choose the field type Timeframe.

  4. Enter a name for the field (for example, Program Increment).

  5. Define for which work item types this custom field is relevant.

  6. Add values and date ranges for each entry.

  7. (Optional) Enable the toggle Applicable for Capacity Planning if you want this timeframe to be used in capacity simulations.

  8. Click Create.
